Timeline: Mr. K’s Through the Years
1966 – Maxwell’s Fabric House Opens
Larry Maxwell opens Maxwell’s Fabric House at 1726 N. 12th Street in Quincy, Illinois. Specializing in upholstery and drapery fabrics, the shop quickly becomes known for offering custom draperies for both residential and commercial use, with a decorator on staff for shop-at-home service.
1973 – A Legacy Begins
Lynn Klingele purchases the business from Maxwell Fabrics and reopens it as Mr. K’s with a grand opening in January 1973. The business specializes in custom drapery and upholstery for local homeowners and businesses.
1980's – Expanding Services
A fabric cutting ceremony in 1981 marked the change of ownership from Lynn Klingele to Guy Chatten at Mr. K’s Fabric Shop. Adding blinds, shades, shutters, and bedding, Mr. K’s becomes a full-service destination for window treatments and home décor.
1990's – A Trusted Name in Quincy
Through word of mouth and dedication to quality, Mr. K’s builds a reputation as the area’s go-to source for custom window solutions, awnings, and exceptional service.
2000's – Partnering with Hunter Douglas
Mr. K’s becomes an official Hunter Douglas dealer, bringing nationally recognized window treatments to the Quincy community with local care and expertise.
2010's – Growth and Community Impact
With a thriving upholstery department and growing commercial work, Mr. K’s serves not only homes but businesses, clinics, and public spaces across the region.
2020's – New Ownership, Same Commitment
Jennifer Young steps in to carry the legacy forward, modernizing the business while honoring its strong roots. Today, Mr. K’s continues to offer custom, high-quality solutions—backed by a team that treats every project like it’s their own home.
